Annandale, Minnesota – Are you brave enough to stay at a hotel that’s haunted by friendly ghosts? Then book a room at the historic Thayer Hotel in charming Annandale, Minnesota. This 1895 railroad hotel is packed with Victorian charm – and plenty of spirited guests from the other side!
Meet the Ghostly Residents
The original owners, Gus and Caroline Thayer, still love playing host even in the afterlife. Gus has been known to leave lucky pennies for guests to find, letting them know he stopped by for a ghostly visit. And don’t be alarmed if you see the transparent figure of Gus tipping his hat to you in welcome.
The devoted hotel handyman apparently still puts in a full day’s work, ghostly toolkit in hand, as he roams the floors tackling his never-ending to-do list. A cordial old sea captain also makes his presence known, his apparition accompanied by the briny scent of the sea. And a trio of good-time gals who once offered their professional services to hotel patrons still sashay through the halls in search of a little afterlife action.
Lock Up Your Lipstick
Ladies, keep a close eye on your cosmetics and keys! The frisky phantoms of the hotel’s former working girls love to playfully rifle through female guests’ belongings, perhaps in search of a ghostly makeover. And they get a giggle out of hiding room keys, only to return them later in a different spot. What a tease!
Feline Phantoms on the Prowl
It’s not just human spirits who haunt the Thayer. Sharp-eyed guests have spotted the apparitions of three ghost cats padding through the halls, blissfully unaware they’ve used up their nine lives. One of the spooky kitties has been identified as Cocoa, the beloved pet of a former owner.
Haunted History
This grande dame of a hotel has seen a lot in her 125 years – and not all of it pretty. During the wild gangster days, Al Capone himself rented out the entire third floor for his entourage when he was on the lam. The Thayer barely escaped the wrecking ball in the 1970s when it had fallen into disrepair. But an intrepid group of locals banded together to save and lovingly restore the faded beauty to her former glory.
After decades of dedicated TLC by a devoted string of owners, the Thayer Hotel (60 Elm St., Annandale, MN 55302) is once again ready for her close-up, offering twelve charming Victorian-style rooms with modern amenities and a gourmet restaurant. And of course, an abundance of friendly ghosts!
