AUSTIN, TX – An elderly man in Texas has been arrested and charged with murder after allegedly killing his 83-year-old roommate and her dog. Authorities have described the crime as particularly brutal, and the suspect’s age has added an unexpected layer of complexity to the case.
Discovery of the Bodies
On Monday afternoon, Austin police responded to a call about a deceased person at a home in the University Hills area. When they arrived, officers found the body of Linda Mlsna, 83, along with her dog. Police said the attack on both the woman and her pet was exceptionally violent. The case marks the 63rd homicide in Austin this year.
While investigating Mlsna’s death, officers found that her roommate, Jack Moore, was missing. Moore had been living with Mlsna after her son moved away, though a neighbor reported that Mlsna had recently expressed concerns about Moore’s presence in the home. About a month before the incident, Mlsna confided in the neighbor, saying she no longer felt comfortable living with him.
Connection to the Crime and Arrest
Police soon connected Moore to the crime when they discovered he had been using Mlsna’s credit cards to make purchases after her death. Investigators later tracked him down, and Moore was arrested on an unrelated carjacking warrant. During his interrogation, he confessed to killing Mlsna and her dog and revealed he had planned to flee the country.
Moore, 84, was charged with first-degree murder. Despite his age, investigators stressed that it is impossible to predict who may be dangerous, even when living with someone for an extended period. He is currently being held in the Travis County Jail on a $1 million bail.
Community Shock and Police Insight
The arrest of Moore has left the local community shaken, as many found it hard to believe that someone of his age could commit such a brutal act. A neighbor described Mlsna as having been wary of Moore in recent weeks, which made the eventual crime even more chilling for those who knew them.
Detective Israel Pina, who worked on the case, pointed out that it’s difficult to predict who might be dangerous based on appearances or age. He emphasized the importance of thoroughly vetting people who are invited into one’s home, noting that Mlsna’s concerns should have been taken more seriously.
