Dodgeville, WI – For over 180 years, folks in Iowa County, Wisconsin have been talking about a spooky legend – the Ridgeway Ghost! This phantom is said to haunt a 25-mile stretch of an old mining road between the village of Blue Mounds and the town of Dodgeville. But here’s the thing, this ghost isn’t your average, run-of-the-mill spirit. Oh no, this one can apparently change its appearance whenever it feels like it!
Before we get into this paranormal mystery, we’d like to mention that we found an article in the New York Times from 1902 called “Some Wisconsin Ghosts” very helpful in our research. Ready to get spooked? Let’s dive in to this haunted place in the Midwest.
π The Origins of the Legend
According to the story, the Ridgeway Ghost is actually two brothers who met a tragic end in a bar fight way back in the 1840s. Ever since then, people have claimed to see all sorts of ghostly figures along that old road. Sometimes it’s a man with a whip, walking alongside them or even chasing them! Other times, it’s animals like dogs or sheep. And if that wasn’t creepy enough, there have even been sightings of a headless horseman and women, both young and old!
π A Ghostly Cycle
Now, here’s where it gets really interesting. Apparently, sightings of the Ridgeway Ghost tend to spike every 40 years or so. It started in the 1850s, then again in the 1890s, 1930s, and 1970s. It’s like this ghost has its own schedule or something!
π©Ί The Doctor’s Tale
The first person to go public about seeing the Ridgeway Ghost was a doctor from Dodgeville named Dr. Cutler. He claimed that one night, as he was riding home in his wagon, the ghost just appeared on the pole between his horses! Yikes! Of course, folks didn’t believe him at first. They thought maybe he’d had a bit too much to drink. But the doc insisted he was stone-cold sober.
πͺ The Wrestler’s Father
Things took a terrifying turn when John Lewis, the father of champion wrestler Evan Lewis, had his own run-in with the ghost. John was a strong, brave man, but even he was no match for this supernatural being. He tried to confront it, but ended up being hurled through the air and pounded into unconsciousness! Tragically, John died from his injuries, but with his dying breath, he swore that something not of this world had attacked him.
π± More Victims
After John’s death, people started to take the Ridgeway Ghost more seriously. And unfortunately, he wasn’t the last victim. A dressmaker died of fright after being chased by the ghost, and even Dr. Cutler himself met his end after seeing the specter for a third time!
π΅οΈ Skeptics and Believers
Over the years, the Ridgeway Ghost has been spotted by all kinds of people – from the superstitious to the skeptical. Even a group of three agnostics claimed to have seen it, and while they believe there must be a natural explanation, they can’t deny what their own eyes showed them.
π A Spooky Legacy Lives On
So, there you have it, folks – the eerie tale of the Ridgeway Ghost! Whether you’re a believer or a skeptic, you’ve got to admit, this legend has some serious staying power. It’s been around for over 180 years and shows no signs of fading away anytime soon.
Who knows, maybe the next time you find yourself on that old mining road in Iowa County, you’ll come face-to-face with the ghost yourself! But don’t worry, just remember to keep your wits about you and maybe bring a friend along for moral support. After all, life’s too short to let a little ghost story scare you away from an adventure!
