ST. PAUL, MN – Picture this: you’ve just ordered a $42 steak, eagerly anticipating a delicious meal. But instead of savoring your first bite, you discover something that makes your stomach churn. For one family, their trip to a steakhouse turned from dining experience to horror when a woman found live maggots wriggling inside her steak. Her disgusting story is now making headlines around the world.
The Disgusting Discovery
The woman, who was dining with her husband and son, noticed something unusual almost immediately when her steak arrived. “I sort of zoomed in, looking at the piece of steak and thought, ‘That’s really odd, there are things moving,’” she recalled. At first, her husband suspected it might be seasoning, but upon closer inspection, they realized the unsettling truth. “We were looking at maggots,” the woman explained to local reporters.
The bizarre discovery took place at Lone Star Rib House in Penrith, Australia on November 10. It was so disturbing that the family flagged the issue with a staff member. They were told the restaurant had an optimal food and health safety rating, but that didn’t do much to calm their concerns.
When the plate was taken back to the kitchen, the staff reportedly had no explanation for how the maggots ended up in the steak. One employee even suggested that the maggots came from the salad, not the meat, a claim that the woman dismissed. “They were having the time of their life on that piece of steak, and there was not one maggot on the salad,” she said in her interview with area media, expressing disbelief that no one in the kitchen noticed the moving steak.
Restaurant’s Response and Reaction
After the incident, the woman chose not to accept a replacement meal, citing that she was “grossed out” and simply wanted to leave. She felt that the situation had not been handled properly and was frustrated with the lack of accountability.
“There should not have been maggots on the plate at all,” she said. She also wondered how such a mistake could happen. “The way I see it there are at least two, maybe three people in that restaurant handling the piece of steak … how did not one of those people notice the steak was moving?”
The restaurant did not comment on the video or the woman’s personal opinions on their hygiene standards but stated that an independent environmental health officer conducted an inspection the following day. This inspection found no significant concerns, noting that the meat was stored properly in sealed bags and no flies were found on the premises.
Investigation Underway
Following the woman’s complaint, Penrith City Council and the NSW Food Authority began investigating the incident. A spokesperson for the council confirmed that the inspection was comprehensive, reviewing everything from the supplier’s food delivery to storage and preparation practices. This investigation comes after a routine, unannounced inspection of the restaurant on November 5, which had not identified any issues.
Despite the inspections and the lack of findings, the woman is still waiting for an apology from the restaurant. “We were out for a family meal, we were hungry, something really disgusting and inappropriate had happened and no one owned up to that,” she told local reporters. The experience has left her hesitant about consuming beef in the future, and it’s clear that the unsettling incident has had a lasting effect on her trust in restaurants.
