ST. PAUL, MN – In a daring heist beneath the waves, two thieves donned diving gear and raided the seafloor off the coast of Egypt, making off with hundreds of priceless ancient artifacts. The stolen treasures, which date back over 2,000 years, were taken from the depths of Abu Qir Bay, just off Alexandria, sparking concerns over the trafficking of historical relics.
The Heist at Abu Qir Bay
Egyptian authorities have revealed that the two men, one of whom has a criminal history, carried out the theft in the Mediterranean waters of Abu Qir Bay.
The men used diving equipment to scour the seafloor, looting a massive collection of ancient artifacts.
Among the items they stole were 448 pieces, including 305 coins, 53 statues, 41 axes, 20 bronze objects, 14 cups, 12 spears, and three statue heads.
The Looted Treasures
The stolen items span over a thousand years of history, from the Greek and Roman periods.
The coins alone are intricately designed, depicting scenes of marine life, including turtles, whales, and elephants, along with what appears to be a crossbow. The items are now stained with a unique turquoise patina caused by oxidation from centuries spent in the sea.
The thieves had planned to traffic the items, which are not only valuable but significant to Egypt’s cultural heritage.
The Men’s Intentions and Arrest
According to Egypt’s interior ministry, the looters confessed that they intended to sell the stolen artifacts. Their arrest followed an investigation that confirmed their involvement in the theft.
Authorities are now working to recover the items and prevent further illegal activity in the area, ensuring that these ancient treasures are returned to their rightful place.
