Thinking Out Loud – Short Stories for Love

In the fourth-grade classroom of Maplewood Elementary, Lucas nervously clutched his handmade Valentine’s card for Ava. The card, adorned with a hand-drawn heart and a dash of glitter, read: “Will you be my Valentine?”

During recess, Lucas planned to leave the card on Ava’s desk. However, he was so nervous, he accidentally set it on the desk next to hers. It was Tony’s desk, the class clown.

After recess, Tony picked it up and announced loudly, “Will you be my Valentine? From Lucas. How romantic!”

The class burst into laughter, but Ava, with a frown, stood up. “That’s enough, Tony,” she said firmly. “It’s not nice to make fun of someone’s feelings.”

Lucas, red-faced and embarrassed, tried to explain, but Ava interrupted him with a smile. “Lucas, check your desk. I think you’ll find something interesting. And don’t be shy to read it out loud.”

Puzzled, Lucas walked back to his desk and found a pink envelope. Inside was a card from Ava: “You are really funny and nice. Will you be my Valentine? XO, Ava”

Noticing Lucas’s hesitation, Ava encouraged him, “It’s okay, Lucas. You can read it out loud. I don’t think you should ever be embarrassed to say something nice to someone.”

With newfound confidence, Lucas read her card aloud for the class to hear. “You are really funny and nice. Will you be my Valentine? XO, Ava”

The class, now touched by the sweet exchange, let out a collective “Aww.”

Tony, feeling a bit sheepish, added, “Well, I guess you got your Valentine after all, Lucas.”

The rest of the day was like a happy blur for Lucas; he felt happier than ever before. He didn’t even care when they had to multiply fractions, which he usually hated doing!

As the bell rang signaling the end of recess, Lucas and Ava exchanged shy smiles. The day that started with a mix-up had turned into a special Valentine’s Day memory, filled with laughter, kindness, and a new beginning for two young hearts.
