Owatonna, MN – Imagine the shock on the faces of construction workers as they tore down an old high school in Owatonna, Minnesota. They expected to find nothing but dust and debris, but instead, they stumbled upon a hidden treasureā€”a time capsule from 1920!

A Glimpse into the Past

The time capsule, which had been tucked away in the school’s cornerstone for over a century, was like a snapshot of life in the 1920s. School district superintendent Jeff Elstad couldn’t contain his excitement. “It’s not every day you get to peek into the past like this,” he told reporters with a grin.

Unveiling the Contents

The community gathered around with bated breath as the capsule was carefully opened, revealing an array of fascinating items. There were yellowed newspapers, financial statements, and even a list of the school’s teachers and administrators from way back when.

As Elstad sifted through the contents, his eyes lit up. “It’s incredible to think about the people who put this together a hundred years ago,” he marveled. “They wanted to leave a legacy for future generations, and boy, did they succeed!”

Preserving the Past for the Future

Now, the real work begins. The Owatonna High School Museum Committee is joining forces with the Steele County Historical Society to ensure these precious artifacts stand the test of time. They’ll be drying out the items and deciding which ones to display at the school and which to add to the historical society’s collection.

For Elstad and the community, this unexpected discovery has been a chance to reconnect with their roots. “It’s a reminder of where we came from and the people who paved the way for us,” Elstad said with a smile. “We’re proud to be a part of keeping that history alive.”
