ST. PAUL, MN – The holiday season always brings so much joy, but for my hubby Jack and me, it’s also a time to give back. We love volunteering at our church every year, wrapping and delivering presents to children who might not otherwise get a gift. We also help out at a local food bank, packing boxes for families in need. It’s always so fulfilling to know that we’re making a real difference in someone’s holiday. There’s just something about sharing kindness during this time of year that feels extra special.

But acts of kindness don’t have to be big to have a lasting impact. Even small gestures can spread joy and brighten someone’s day. The holidays can be a stressful time for many people, and a little kindness can go a long way. Here are some simple ways to spread joy and show others that you care during the holidays.

Why Kindness Matters During the Holidays

The holidays are often filled with excitement and cheer, but for some, it’s also a time of stress, loneliness, or hardship. While we’re busy with shopping, cooking, and celebrating, others might be struggling to make ends meet or simply looking for a little connection. That’s where kindness comes in.

Simple acts of goodwill can help lighten someone’s load and remind them that they’re not alone. Plus, showing kindness creates a ripple effect, encouraging others to do the same.

Simple Acts of Kindness to Spread Joy

Here are a few easy ways to spread kindness this holiday season:

1. Compliment Strangers

We all love a good compliment, but sometimes, we forget how powerful they can be. Whether it’s admiring someone’s festive sweater, their smile, or their kindness, a small compliment can brighten anyone’s day. It costs nothing but means everything.

2. Send Handwritten Cards or Notes

In this age of digital communication, a handwritten card or note can feel especially thoughtful. Take a few minutes to write a personal message to a friend, family member, or even someone you haven’t spoken to in a while. It’s a simple way to show that you care and are thinking of them.

3. Donate to a Cause or Charity

The holidays are a great time to support those in need. Whether it’s donating to a food bank, giving to a charity, or sponsoring a child’s wish through a local organization, your contributions can make someone’s holiday brighter. Jack and I always love picking out gifts for the kids in our community who may not have a lot to open on Christmas morning. The look of joy on their faces is priceless.

4. Offer to Help Neighbors

If you have neighbors who are elderly, ill, or just struggling, offer to help with everyday tasks like grocery shopping, raking leaves, or shoveling snow. You’d be surprised how much a small favor can mean to someone who might not be able to do it themselves. Plus, it’s a great way to build stronger connections within your community.

5. Support Local Businesses

Shopping locally not only supports small business owners, but it also strengthens the community. This holiday season, consider buying gifts from local artisans or family-owned shops. Jack and I always love visiting the holiday markets and picking out unique gifts that you can’t find in big-box stores. It’s a wonderful way to make your purchases more meaningful.

6. Practice Random Acts of Kindness

Sometimes, it’s the little things that make the biggest impact. Pay for someone’s coffee in line behind you, leave an extra generous tip for your server, or hold the door for a stranger. It’s easy to do, and you never know how much it might brighten someone’s day.

How Kindness Benefits the Giver

While spreading kindness feels good for the recipient, it’s also great for the person giving. Studies show that acts of kindness can reduce stress, boost happiness, and even improve overall mental well-being.

Helping others makes us feel more connected and fulfilled, especially during a season focused on giving. Whether it’s the joy of seeing someone smile or the satisfaction of knowing you’ve made a difference, kindness truly is a gift that keeps on giving.

Making Kindness a Habit Beyond the Holidays

It’s easy to get caught up in the spirit of the season, but why not make kindness a year-round habit? Small acts of goodwill don’t have to be reserved for the holidays. Whether it’s volunteering, complimenting others, or offering help to a neighbor, you can spread kindness every day.

Jack and I make an effort to stay involved in our community even after the holiday season ends. It’s about creating lasting connections and continuing to spread joy, no matter the time of year.

A Time of Joy and Celebration

The holidays are a time for joy, celebration, and connection. But they’re also a reminder that even the smallest acts of kindness can make a huge difference. Whether you’re volunteering your time, donating to a cause, or simply offering a kind word, your actions can bring warmth and cheer to those who need it most. So this season, let’s make kindness a priority and share the joy with others—because ‘tis the season for giving, in every sense of the word.
