MARTINEZ, CA – A routine traffic stop in California turned into a massive drug bust when officers discovered over 125 pounds of marijuana crammed into trash bags inside a vehicle. What started as a simple speed enforcement stop quickly escalated when California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers spotted the illegal cargo in plain sight.

Large-Scale Drug Bust During Routine Stop

CHP Contra Costa officers were conducting a speed enforcement operation in Contra Costa County when they pulled over a vehicle for a traffic violation.

As they approached, they immediately noticed “large quantities of marijuana” packed inside the car.

Photos released by CHP reveal the vehicle’s backseat and trunk overflowing with large black garbage bags, each stuffed with marijuana.

The sheer volume of the seized cannabis—more than 125 pounds—suggests the suspects may have been involved in drug trafficking.

Two Arrested on Drug Charges

The driver and passenger, whose identities have not been released, were taken into custody on drug possession charges.

Authorities did not disclose whether additional charges might be filed or if the suspects had prior records.

CHP’s Commitment to Public Safety

In a statement, the CHP emphasized its ongoing efforts to remove illegal substances from California roads. “This enforcement action highlights the ongoing efforts by the CHP to keep illegal substances off our roads and ensure public safety,” the agency stated.

They urged the public to report any suspicious activity or impaired driving by contacting their local CHP office or dialing 911.

The case remains under investigation as authorities work to determine the origin and intended destination of the seized drugs.
