MIAMI, FL – A celebration meant to ring in the New Year turned tragic in Miami, Florida when a 10-year-old girl was struck and killed by celebratory gunfire just moments after midnight. The incident, occurring on the heels of fireworks and cheers, has left the community reeling and has once again raised concerns over the dangers of shooting firearms into the air during celebrations.

The tragic event took place just after the clock struck 12:00 a.m. on Wednesday, when 10-year-old Yaneliz Munguia was fatally injured in the area of NW 27th Avenue and NW 21st Street in Miami.
According to the Miami-Dade Police Department, Yaneliz was struck by a stray bullet fired into the air as part of New Year’s Eve celebrations. Authorities responded quickly, but sadly, the young girl succumbed to her injuries shortly after the incident.
“This heartbreaking incident serves as a devastating reminder that what goes up must come down. Bullets fired into the air can take innocent lives,” the Miami-Dade Police Department stated in a release.
