POUGHKEEPSIE, NY — A cozy fall getaway to Clinton, New York turned tragic when a young teacher and her 1-year-old baby girl lost their lives in what prosecutors say was an entirely preventable rental property fire. Now, the homeowners face serious consequences for their alleged negligence.

The Fatal Night

Westchester County couple Dennis Darcy, 57, and Meredith Darcy, 55, are facing manslaughter charges after allegedly lying about having smoke detectors in their Dutchess County Airbnb property.

The October 14 blaze claimed the lives of Shannon Hubbard and her 1-year-old daughter while they were vacationing from Brewster, Massachusetts.

Escape and Rescue

The horror unfolded when the Hubbard family noticed smoke while relaxing on the patio. John Hubbard managed to save their 3-year-old child, but Shannon and their baby daughter became trapped inside.

East Clinton Fire Department responders pulled the family from the burning building, but despite their efforts, mother and daughter were pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Code Violations Revealed

Investigators uncovered that the rental property not only lacked required smoke detectors but also operated without a mandatory short-term special use permit.

Dutchess County District Attorney Anthony Parisi emphasized that the Darcys allegedly knew about and ignored the deadly risks created by the missing safety devices.

Legal Proceedings Begin

The Hastings-on-Hudson couple posted bail—set at $50,000 cash or up to $200,000 bond by Judge Michael Hayes—and await their April 7 court date. As with all criminal cases, the Darcys are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

In Memoriam

Shannon Hubbard devoted her life to teaching and nurturing young minds in Cape Cod, while cherishing every moment with her precious baby girl and family. As their community mourns these bright lights taken far too soon, Psalm 34:18 offers comfort to those left behind: “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” They will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved them.
