SKAMANIA COUNTY, WA – A search for Bigfoot in Washington’s Gifford Pinchot National Forest took a tragic turn this weekend when two men were found dead after a three-day rescue operation. The pair, both from Portland, Oregon, set out in hopes of encountering the elusive creature, but their expedition ended in death after they failed to return home as planned.

The Search Begins

The two men, aged 59 and 37, went missing on Christmas Eve, December 24, 2024. They had been venturing into eastern Skamania County in search of Sasquatch, also known as Bigfoot, but their planned return never came.

On the morning of December 25, around 1 a.m., they were reported missing by concerned family members. Authorities began searching the area off Oklahoma Road near Willard, Washington, after locating their vehicle using Flock cameras, which capture license plates to track down vehicles.

A Massive Search Effort

A rescue operation was launched immediately, involving over 60 volunteer personnel. The search teams braved freezing temperatures, snow, rain, high water levels, and dense, rugged terrain over the course of three days.

Along with canine units, drone teams, and support from U.S. Coast Guard air assets equipped with infrared cameras, the volunteers worked tirelessly to locate the missing men. The weather conditions proved challenging, but the teams remained committed to the mission, despite the risks.

Tragic Discovery

On December 28, the two men were found dead in a heavily wooded area of the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. According to the Skamania County Sheriff’s Office, the deaths appeared to be caused by exposure, which was likely worsened by the men’s lack of proper preparation for the harsh conditions.

The sheriff’s office stated that “both deaths appear to be due to exposure, based on weather conditions and ill-preparedness.”

The Skamania County Sheriff’s Office expressed gratitude for the volunteers who participated in the search. “The Skamania County Sheriff’s Office would like to recognize the exceptional volunteers who sacrificed time away from their families during Christmas to assist our agency with this mission,” the office said.

“These phenomenal volunteers also fought through freezing temperatures, snow, high water levels, heavy rain, downfall, and heavily wooded terrain.”
