LOS ANGELES, CA – Adam Sandler on Wednesday hinted that Travis Kelce may have been cast as his character’s son in the upcoming sequel to the 1996 golf comedy “Happy Gilmore.”
Sandler sat down with brothers Travis and Jason Kelce for the season 3 premiere of their “New Heights” podcast out Wednesday, and talked about the Kansas City Chiefs tight end’s role in “Happy Gilmore 2.”
“We were talking about you playing my son while we were writing it literally like, six months ago,” said Sandler, 57. “We were like, ‘Imagine if Travis was my first baby, how funny that would be.'”
Sandler confirmed during an appearance on “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon” last week that Travis Kelce will appear in “Happy Gilmore 2.”
“I think I’ve got the swing down,” said Travis, 34, adding that he practiced his golfing after the announcement.
“Because the scene you’re doing is with so many great golfers. It’s gonna be amazing. You’re gonna be funny as hell,” Sandler said.
The original “Happy Gilmore” followed Andler’s titular character, who dreamed of playing hockey before discovering his swing was better suited to golf. Through the course of the movie, he takes the stodgy golf world by storm with his brash personality.
Sandler has said that “Happy Gilmore 2” “picks up from an older guy who played golf a long time. Some stuff goes on in his life, and he’s different — he’s a bit of a mess. And then we try to get his life cooking again.”
Rumors of a “Happy Gilmore” sequel have been swirling for months, and in May, Netflix confirmed partnering with Sandler for “Happy Gilmore 2.”
“We got all the trust in the world you’re going to bring Happy back and make him lovable again,” Travis told Sandler.
