WASHINGTON COUNTY, MN – The peaceful community of Hugo, Minnesota was shattered this week when a gruesome crime hit far too close to home. The brutal slaying of a local woman, allegedly at the hands of her own son, led to a frantic 24-hour manhunt that left residents on edge, wondering if the suspect could be hiding in their own backyard.

A Frightening 911 Call

It all began with a chilling 911 call on Monday evening. Dispatchers could only listen in horror as a woman’s desperate groans filled the line, accompanied by the unmistakable sound of a man shouting in the background. The call would become the final moments of 68-year-old Charlene Wunderlich’s life.

When officers arrived at her home on Ingersoll Avenue North, they were met with a horrifying scene. Charlene lay bruised and battered, with her son, 45-year-old Trevor Wunderlich, looming over her. A fight for life was underway, but it wasn’t enough.

Deputies attempted to subdue Trevor with a taser, but he managed to break free and flee the scene—disappearing into the surrounding rural area, leaving his mother to die from her injuries.

A Killer on the Run

For more than 24 hours, Trevor Wunderlich was a ghost. The thought of a suspected murderer hiding somewhere nearby had locals in a panic, locking their doors and looking over their shoulders. Law enforcement agencies from across the metro worked tirelessly, knowing that this dangerous man could be anywhere.

The search intensified, but with no immediate sign of the suspect, fear began to take hold. Was Trevor lurking in the shadows, waiting for another opportunity to strike? Residents were urged to be vigilant, to keep their families indoors. No one was safe until he was caught.

A Narrow Escape

Then, on Tuesday morning, the nightmare came to a dramatic close. Just before 11 a.m., a local resident spotted something chilling—a man fitting Trevor’s description in their own yard. With terror racing through their veins, they immediately called 911.

Deputies descended on the scene, apprehending Trevor Wunderlich without incident. But the damage had already been done. A mother was dead, a community was shaken, and the fear of what could have happened still lingered in the air.

The Aftermath

Trevor Wunderlich now sits in the Washington County Jail, awaiting formal charges. But even as the suspect is behind bars, the unsettling truth remains: this horrifying tragedy unfolded right in the heart of a quiet neighborhood. If it could happen here, who’s to say it won’t happen again, right next door?

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office thanked the public for their vigilance in helping capture Trevor. But many are left with one haunting question: how can we feel safe, when danger is this close to home?
