EAST STROUDSBURG, PA — When TSA agents at Newark Liberty International Airport spotted something unusual in a passenger’s groin area during a routine body scan last Friday, they weren’t prepared for what they’d find. The Pennsylvania traveler had stuffed a living, breathing turtle down the front of his pants.

A Very Shell-fish Act

The East Stroudsburg resident triggered alarms during his security screening, prompting New Jersey TSA officers to conduct a pat-down.

When questioned about the suspicious bulge, the man reached into his pants and produced a red-ear slider turtle, carefully wrapped in a blue towel.

Not Your Average Smuggling Attempt

Thomas Carter, the TSA’s Federal Security Director for New Jersey explained that while they frequently intercept people attempting to conceal weapons in various places, this marked their first encounter with someone hiding a live animal in their pants.

The Turtle Tale Ends

The five-inch reptile, identified as one of America’s most popular pet turtle species, appeared unharmed by its unconventional travel arrangements.

Port Authority Police took custody of the small creature and planned to coordinate with U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and local animal control officials.

The unnamed passenger, who has not been charged with any crime at the time of reporting and is presumed innocent unless proven guilty, missed his flight and was escorted from the security checkpoint by law enforcement.

TSA officials praised their officer’s professionalism during the unusual pat-down procedure. The incident marks the first documented case of live turtle smuggling via pants at Newark Liberty International Airport.
