ST. PAUL, MN – Travelers across the country are being reminded that all firearms, no matter how ‘pretty,’ are strictly prohibited at airport security checkpoints. Why the no-surprise-here announcement from the TSA now? Because of an incident earlier this week that raised alarm bells nationwide.
Passengers at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport were in for a surprise Monday when TSA officers intercepted a uniquely designed gun from a Georgia woman’s carry-on luggage. The weapon, which featured an ornate floral design, sparked quick action from security.
Without delay, the gun was confiscated by authorities. The incident drew attention not only because of the weapon’s aesthetic but also because of the timing – just days before the 23rd anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.
TSA Officers Intercept Handgun
TSA officers discovered a teal 9mm handgun decorated with black floral patterns during a routine checkpoint scan. Alongside the weapon, three gun magazines carrying 30 bullets were found. Washington Metropolitan Airports Authority Police quickly responded, confiscating the firearm.
The woman, who was cited by police, allegedly stated that she had accidentally packed the weapon in her carry-on luggage. The TSA reminded travelers that, despite its appearance, the gun was still prohibited on planes.
Security Reminder After 9/11 Anniversary
“This gun was intercepted at our checkpoint just three days before the 23rd anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on our nation,” stated John Busch, TSA’s Federal Security Director at Reagan National Airport.
He emphasized, “It doesn’t matter what color your gun is — black, green, teal — they are all prohibited on planes. People who own firearms need to know where their guns are at all times.”
TSA officers continue to enforce strict rules to prevent firearms from making their way onto airplanes, reminding passengers of the severe penalties. Carrying a gun through a checkpoint could lead to fines of up to $15,000. This incident marks the 28th firearm intercepted at Reagan National this year, a number that continues to rise as TSA officers stay vigilant.
“23 years after 9/11, everyone should know that you are not allowed to carry any weapons past our checkpoints. Our officers are good at what they do and everyone who works for TSA is very mindful of how the terrorist attacks of 9/11 impacted our nation,” Busch concluded.
