ST. PAUL, MN – The Transportation Security Administration said it is preparing for what is expected to be the busiest Labor Day travel period on record.
The agency said it anticipates screening more than 17 million travelers from Thursday, Aug. 29 through Wednesday, Sept. 4, with the peak travel day expected to be Aug. 30, with 2.86 million travelers.
“People are traveling more than ever this summer and TSA along with our airline and airport partners stand ready to close the busiest summer travel period on record during this upcoming Labor Day weekend,” TSA Administrator David Pekoske said in a statement.
“I commend our vigilant workforce, from our TSOs [Transportation Security Officers] on the front lines at airport security checkpoints across the country to those behind the scenes, working hard to keep the transportation system secure — especially as we continue to roll out new checkpoint technology that improves security effectiveness, efficiency, and the passenger experience.”
The TSA said travel volumes this summer are the highest the agency has seen in its history, with 239.8 million people screened since Memorial Day weekend, an average of 2.7 million people per day.
Travel volumes over the Labor Day holiday period are expected to be 8.5 percent higher than last year.
The ten busiest travel days in the agency’s history have all occurred since May of this year, with a new milestone reached on July 7, when more than 3 million people were screened in a single day.
The agency said it is fully staffed to meet the anticipated Labor Day travel volumes. TSA PreCheck lanes are expected to have waits of 10 minutes or less, while standard screening lanes are expected to have wait times of 30 minutes or less. Safe travels!
