Pella, Iowa – Step into a colorful world of tulips at Pella’s Tulip Time Festival! Every spring, this charming Iowa town turns into a Dutch paradise, complete with windmills, wooden shoes, and, of course, tulips everywhere.
This spring the tulips will be more stunning than ever. Pella, founded by Dutch settlers in 1847, is about 40 miles from Des Moines. It’s a place where the spirit of the Netherlands is alive and well.
As the locals in Pella like to say: if it ain’t Dutch, it ain’t much!
During Tulip Time, the town transforms into a European village. Stroll through the Dutch market, watch the Dutch dancers, and listen to the clack of wooden shoes.
But the real stars are the tulips. The City of Pella plants tens of thousands of them in Central Park and Sunken Gardens Park to honor their Dutch roots.
In Central Park, Tulip Avenue is a sight to behold, with vibrant blossoms stretching from the North fountain to the center of the park. Don’t miss the Scholte Gardens behind the Historic Scholte House Museum, where over 25,000 tulips bloom. It’s a perfect spot to relax on a bench, admire the flowers, and take in the scenery, including some intriguing sculptures and a gazebo.
Mark your calendars for May 2-4, 2024, when the festival comes alive with fireworks, Dutch singers, and dancers. Want to learn more? Visit their website here. There’s even a walking parade with 10 colorful floats, giving you an up-close look at the festivities.
