Before we delve into all the fun you can have at a pride festival, I wanted to clarify what the term LGBTQ+ means. But humor me first. Now is as good of a time as any for me to share with you my hubby Jack’s one good (clean) gay joke:
“I keep asking what LGBTQ+ stands for…
but so far no one has given me a straight answer!“
Gosh, I’m sorry y’all. That one was bad! But if you know Jack you know he loves telling funny dad jokes. Hehe. Ok, let’s get back to the article…
What Does LGBTQ+ Mean?
LGBTQ+ is an acronym that stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, and other marginalized groups based on gender or sexuality. The “+” sign indicates that the acronym is inclusive of other identities that fall under the umbrella of the LGBTQ+ community, such as intersex, asexual, and non-binary individuals.

Here is a brief explanation of each letter in the acronym:
- Lesbians are women attracted to other women.
- Gays are men attracted to other men.
- A bisexual is someone who is attracted to people of more than one gender.
- Transgender is a term used for someone whose gender identity does not match the sex they were assigned at birth.

By the way, the term “gay” is sometimes used as an umbrella term for the LGBTQ+ community as a whole. So sometimes that’s a little confusing.
Like “gay” the term “Queer” can be used to describe a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity, but it’s also an umbrella term for the LGBTQ+ community as a whole. It has been reclaimed by some members of the community as a term of empowerment.
