MIAMI, FL — A desperate attempt to outrun the law turned into a massive cocaine seizure when drug runners dumped their cargo into the Eastern Pacific, leading to one of U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Air and Marine Operations’ biggest maritime drug busts this year.

High-Tech Hunt Leads to Major Score

A U.S. Customs and Border Protection P-3 surveillance plane spotted suspicious activity during what seemed like a routine patrol.

The aircraft’s advanced detection systems locked onto a speedboat racing through international waters, triggering an immediate response from regional authorities.

Chase on the High Seas

El Salvadorian law enforcement vessels sprang into action, guided by real-time intel from the American aircraft overhead.

As authorities gained ground, the panicked crew began hurling evidence overboard in what would prove to be a futile attempt to avoid arrest.

Massive Recovery Operation

The American surveillance crew kept their eyes on both the fleeing vessel and the floating contraband, directing El Salvadorian forces to both locations.

The operation netted approximately 3,300 pounds of cocaine – worth an estimated $60 million (wholesale) or $150 million (retail) on the street – along with three suspects who were taken into custody.

International Cooperation Pays Off

This operation showcases the effectiveness of cross-border partnerships in disrupting drug trafficking routes.

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Air and Marine Operations division maintains a constant presence over vast stretches of ocean, using cutting-edge technology to spot suspicious vessels before they can reach American shores.

The specialized P-3 aircraft that made the initial detection is part of an elite fleet designed specifically for long-range maritime surveillance. These planes patrol the waters around the United States, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, acting as airborne watchdogs in the ongoing fight against international drug trafficking.
