Bismarck, North Dakota – In April 1950, the people of North Dakota were in for a surprise. The idea of “flying saucers” was still fresh, and the famous Roswell Incident had only happened a few years earlier. So, when the headline “Hold everything, folks, Bismarck’s got a flying saucer story, too!” appeared in the local newspaper, it caught everyone’s attention.

This event became one of North Dakota‘s earliest sky mysteries. The report said that a shiny disk, the kind that had been puzzling the nation, was spotted one morning over Bismarck.

Three high school students from Grand Forks, John Thorgrimsen, Gene Schere, and Bob Lampman, all around 18 years old, claimed to have seen the strange object while driving across the Liberty Memorial Bridge from Mandan to Bismarck.

The bridge, a significant landmark built in 1920, was the first to connect eastern and western North Dakota. It was an important part of U.S. Highway 10, linking the country coast to coast.

Gene Schere was the first to notice the mysterious object. “I was driving the car and I happened to look out across the trees and there it was – real shiny. At first it appeared to be standing still,” he said.

John Thorgrimsen added, “I thought it was going to land on the river!” The boys watched the disc for about ten seconds before it started to move, leaving “little swirls behind it,” and then sped off to the south and east.

They even tried to get a bridge repair crew to look at the saucer, but the flagman, too busy with traffic, didn’t take them seriously. However, he later confirmed the boys had mentioned seeing something.

The boys described the object as a discus-shaped craft, floating about 2,000 feet above, with no markings or visible occupants.

Despite their story, the local airport and police received no other reports of a flying saucer. The airport dismissed the sighting as vapor trails from a C-47 airplane that had landed around the same time. But the boys remained unconvinced, insisting what they saw was no airplane.

The true nature of what flew over the Liberty Memorial Bridge that day remains a mystery, leaving us to wonder about the secrets hidden in our skies. What do you think the teens saw that day in 1950? Let us know in the comments!
