Minneapolis, Minnesota – The Land of 10,000 Lakes is no stranger to UFO sightings. In fact, Minnesota has been a hotspot for extraterrestrial encounters for decades. The National UFO Reporting Center has been keeping track of these sightings for nearly 50 years, and their database is filled with thousands of reports from all over the United States. In Minnesota alone, there have been over 2,000 sightings reported!

From the Twin Cities to the Great Outdoors

While the Twin Cities have seen their fair share of UFO activity, with over 250 sightings reported between Minneapolis and St. Paul, the rest of the state has not been left out. From the cabins of South Long Lake to the skies above Roseville, Minnesotans have been witnessing strange lights and objects in the sky for years.

One particularly intriguing report comes from a family who was enjoying a clear night at their cabin outside of Brainerd in 1932. They saw a single light flash across the sky, pause, and hover over the lake for about five minutes before taking off. The fact that there was very little airplane traffic and no helicopters at the time makes this sighting all the more mysterious.

The Val Johnson Incident: Minnesota’s Most Famous UFO Encounter

Perhaps the most well-known UFO encounter in Minnesota’s history is the Val Johnson incident of 1979. According to the Minnesota Historical Society, this event is considered one of the most credible in U.S. history.

The story goes that Marshall County Deputy Sheriff Val Johnson was driving on State Highway 220 in the early morning hours of August 27, 1979, when he saw a bright light in the sky. The light allegedly entered his car, causing glass to break and Johnson to lose consciousness. When he woke up nearly 40 minutes later, his car was over 850 feet from where he had stopped, and it was severely damaged.

Johnson suffered burns to his eyes, and both his clock and wristwatch had lost 14 minutes. The car is still on display at the Marshall County Historical Society in Warren, serving as a reminder of this incredible encounter.

Following the incident, Johnson became a national celebrity. His story has been referenced on popular TV shows such as “The X-Files” and “Fargo,” cementing its place in pop culture history. In 2019, Newsweek even named the Val Johnson incident the 10th most credible UFO sighting in history, further adding to its mystique.

The Truth is Out There

Despite the numerous UFO sightings in Minnesota and across the country, the truth behind these encounters remains a mystery. Some sightings have been debunked, like the circle of white lights seen by many on August 9, 2015, which turned out to be from Mystic Lake Casino. Others, like the Val Johnson incident, continue to captivate and perplex us.

Whether you’re a believer or a skeptic, there’s no denying that Minnesota’s UFO sightings have captured the imagination of many.
