BALTIMORE, MD — In an inspiring move to tackle food insecurity, four career-driven women from here in Baltimore, Maryland have come together to establish the Bmore Community Fridge Network. Their mission is to connect residents with local community fridges and neighborhood pantries, ensuring that free food resources are accessible to those in need.
Bridging the Gap to Food Access
Elizabeth Miller, one of the organizers, emphasized the challenges many face in reaching traditional food pantries. Factors such as limited operating hours, transportation issues, and personal constraints can make it difficult for individuals to obtain necessary supplies. By highlighting and mapping out these community-driven food resources, the network aims to bring aid closer to home for many Baltimore residents.
Local Organizations Join the Cause
The initiative has garnered support from various local organizations. The Journey Mental Health and Wellness center, under the leadership of CEO Nikki Smith, has embraced the project wholeheartedly. Smith has pledged to provide food to anyone in need, reinforcing the center’s commitment to holistic community support. The Bmore Community Fridge Network has facilitated the donation of a refrigerator to be placed outside Smith’s center, with other organizations contributing to keep it stocked.
Similarly, The Food Project is set to receive a donated refrigerator, enhancing their capacity to serve the community. Executive Director Michelle Suavo expressed enthusiasm about the additional access to food, noting that despite frequent pop-up markets, the demand remains high. The new fridge is anticipated to significantly address this ongoing need.
Community Encouragement and Future Plans
As the network continues to grow, Miller encourages community members to contribute by donating canned goods, shelf-stable items, or frozen products to these community fridges. She underscores the importance of mutual aid, reminding individuals to take what they need without hesitation, as there are always mouths to feed at home.
