ST. PAUL, MN â It’s a story that’s making headlines around the world, and even has folks from here in Minnesota talking. In a quaint British neighborhood, two great-grandmothers, Josie Church and Anne Wallace-Hadrill, have reached the impressive age of 101, both celebrating their birthdays on April 1, 2025. Born on the same day in 1924, these neighbors have shared more than just a birth date; theyâve built a deep bond over decades.Â
A Lifetime Next Door
Since the 1980s, Church and Wallace-Hadrill have lived side by side. Their friendship deepened after both became widows. Wallace-Hadrill, originally from Hampshire, moved to Oxford following the passing of her husband, historian John Michael Wallace-Hadrill. She had a distinguished career, teaching English at St. Hildaâs College, Oxford University, and serving as a radio mechanic in the Womenâs Royal Naval Service during World War II.
Church, hailing from Manchester, trained as a nurse at Preston Royal Infirmary. Her nursing career during World War II included caring for German SS soldiers, an experience she described as challenging due to their reluctance to be treated by British nurses. After the war, she moved to Oxford with her husband, Peter, so he could continue his studies at University College. The couple immersed themselves in the academic community, living among a diverse group of students, some of whom were war veterans resuming their education.
Active and Creative Lives
Both women led active lives filled with volunteering and creative pursuits. Wallace-Hadrill engaged in painting and tapestry, showcasing her artistic talents. Church balanced her nursing career with family life, raising three children: Chris, Pamela, and Andrew. She also took on the role of house nurse at a boysâ boarding school where her husband was a housemaster, caring for 120 boys.
Reflecting on their longevity, Church shared that life simply involves moving from one task to another, without overthinking the passage of time. She emphasized that they didnât dwell on time passing; it just did.
Community Celebrations
Their 100th birthday was marked by a surprise celebration organized by their close-knit community. Church expressed gratitude for their supportive neighborhood, describing it as an extended family where everyone knows each other and offers help when needed. She felt fortunate to be part of such a caring environment.
