SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH ā A tragic incident unfolded over the weekend at Willard Bay State Park, where a Utah father lost his life while trying to save his son from drowning. The incident occurred as sudden thunderstorms impacted the area, creating dangerous conditions for those on the water.
In times of unimaginable loss, we are reminded of the words in Psalm 34:18, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” As we reflect on this tragedy, let us offer our prayers and support to the family who is enduring such a profound loss, trusting that God is near to them in their grief.
Storm Turns Deadly During Family Outing
Andre Leon Debose, a 38-year-old resident of Layton, was enjoying a day of swimming and boating with his 17-year-old son on Saturday. The situation took a dire turn around 4:30 p.m. when a sudden storm hit the park near Eagle Beach.
A 19-year-old woman, who was also swimming in the lake, began to struggle in the choppy waters, prompting Deboseās son to jump in to assist her.
Rescue Attempt Leads to Further Danger
The woman, who was wearing a life jacket, was successfully brought back aboard the boat by Deboseās son. However, as he attempted to reboard the vessel himself, he began to experience difficulty in the turbulent water.
Witnesses reported that Andre Debose then leaped from the boat to assist his son, who was holding onto a life jacket in the water.
Tragic Outcome
Despite their efforts, the situation worsened as Debose struggled to stay afloat. While his son managed to make it back to the boat, Debose tragically went under the water and did not resurface.
A search and rescue operation was launched immediately, and emergency crews worked tirelessly to locate him. Unfortunately, his body was recovered from the water hours later, around 11:15 p.m.
