CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – A Virginia man charged with making threats against Vice President Kamala Harris allegedly made thousands of online posts threatening multiple federal officials, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Virginia said Monday.
Frank Lucio Carillo, 66, was arrested in Winchester last week and made his first court appearance on Monday to face a charge of making threats against the Vice President of the United States.
According to court documents, officials in Maricopa County, Ariz., notified the FBI’s Phoenix field office on July 27 of potential threats made on the social media platform GETTR. The threats were posted by the user “joemadarats1.”
FBI investigators learned the “joemadarats1” account had made approximately 4,359 posts and replies targeting not only Harris, but also President Joe Biden, FBI Director Christopher Wray and others. Harris was mentioned 19 times, including “numerous” threats of violence.
In February of this year, “joemadarats1” posted that he had his “AR-15 LOCKED AND LOADED.”
Using GETTR subscriber information and other methods, the FBI connected the “joemadarats1” user account to Carillo, and tracked his location to Winchester, Va.
On Aug. 2, the FBI executed a search warrant at Carillo’s home and seized a 9 mm pistol, an AR-15 rifle and thousands of rounds of ammunition.
“Open political discourse is a cornerstone of our American experience. We can disagree. We can argue and we can debate. However, when those disagreements cross the line to threats of violence, law enforcement must step in,” U.S. Attorney Christopher R. Kavanaugh said in a statement.
“The FBI’s mission is to protect the American people. We take all threats of violence seriously, and we will investigate them to the fullest and hold those responsible accountable,” Special Agent in Charge Stanley M. Meador of the FBI’s Richmond Division said.
