ORANGE, VA – An injured skydiver in Virginia was rescued Sunday after becoming stranded in a tree canopy nearly 100 feet in the air after a midair collision, officials said.
The Orange Volunteer Fire Company said firefighters responded at around 4:40 p.m. Sunday to the back of a farm on Mt. Sharon Road, where an injured skydiver was trapped atop trees towering around 100 feet in the air.
The skydiver ended up in the tree canopy following a midair collision with another skydiver, who landed along the side of Route 20.
Fire crews had to clear a path for a truck with a large enough ladder to reach the skydiver, because “our ground ladders simply could not reach,” the fire department said.
A video of the rescue captured by Firefighter Harrison Cluff shows the massive ladder reaching to the tops of the trees, where the injured skydiver could barely be seen.
A rescuer climbed the ladder to assist the victim and cut away his parachute before lowering him to the ground. The fire department said it took about an hour to get the skydiver down.
The skydiver was transported by ambulance to the Orange County Airport, where an AirCare helicopter was waiting to transport him to the hospital. The fire department did not specify the nature of the skydiver’s injuries.
