Should Minnesotans Get To Vote On A New State Flag?

St. Paul, Minnesota – Some Minnesota Republicans are really pushing hard to let people vote on whether the state should get a brand new flag. Senator Steve Drazkowski says they need to let regular Minnesotans have a say in this and be heard.

This all comes after a special commission spent months picking out a new design to replace the current Minnesota state flag. But not everyone’s on board with the change.

A few dozen folks rallied at the Capitol to keep the old flag. Lawmaker Bjorn Olson says he’s heard from constituents who want a vote. He thinks Minnesotans deserve the right to vote for what represents them – the old flag or the new one.

Olson introduced a bill to put the new flag up for a statewide vote. He says there could be a simple yes or no question on the ballot, asking if this new design represents you.

But the Secretary of State says the state constitution doesn’t really allow for that kind of referendum vote. He thinks a constitutional amendment might be needed first.

Olson wants to avoid an amendment if possible. But he’s got another bill ready that would let voters amend the constitution to require voting on any future state flag changes.

On the other side, Democratic leaders feel like the redesign process is already settled. Olson’s last option is trying to pause the new flag and poll every lawmaker’s constituents first.
