WASHINGTON, D.C. – Walmart has recalled nearly 10,000 cases of Great Value brand apple juice that were found to contain high levels of inorganic arsenic, according to a notice posted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The FDA on Friday raised the recall’s classification to Class II, a more urgent level, after initially issuing the recall on Aug. 15. The higher classification warns the recalled product may cause temporary adverse health effects, though the likelihood of irreversible medical issues was remote.

Florida-based manufacturer Refresco Beverages U.S. Inc. issued the voluntary recall of 9,535 cases of Great Value brand six-packs of 8-ounce bottles of apple juice, which were sold in 25 states, Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C., after they were found to contain arsenic of around 13 parts per billion, above levels considered safe to consume by the FDA.

Walmart has recalled nearly 10,000 cases of Great Value apple juice due to elevated levels of inorganic arsenic.

“The health and safety of our customers is always a top priority,” Walmart spokesperson Molly Blakeman said in a statement. “We have removed this product from our impacted stores and are working with the supplier to investigate.”

According to the FDA, organic arsenic is a naturally widespread mineral at low levels, and exposure doesn’t typically carry any health consequences. Inorganic arsenic, on the other hand, is more toxic, classified as a carcinogen, and the effects of exposure are more severe.

Exposure to elevated levels of either form of arsenic can cause symptoms including vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, numbness and muscle cramping.

Despite the elevated levels of inorganic arsenic found in the recalled apple juice, the FDA said levels are still low enough that exposure is unlikely to cause severe health effects. Does your family drink Great Value apple juice from Walmart? Let us know in the comments!
