WASHINGTON, D.C. – A Washington, D.C., Council member was arrested on Sunday for allegedly agreeing to accept more than $150,000 in bribe payments, officials said.

Trayon White Sr., the D.C. Council member representing Ward 8, was arrested Sunday on a criminal complaint charging him with bribery, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia announced Monday.

White, 40, is the Chair of the Councilā€™s Committee on Recreation, Libraries and Youth Affairs, which oversees several agencies including the D.C. Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services (DYRS).

According to the complaint, beginning in June of this year, he allegedly agreed to accept $156,000 in cash payments in exchange for pressuring employees at DYRS and the Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement (ONSE) to extend several contracts for two companies.

The contracts in question were for two companies to provide violence intervention services in the District. The amount of the bribe came to 3% of the value of the contracts, at $5.2 million.

According to the complaint, White’s alleged agreement with the owner of the two companies, who was not named, was captured on video, along with the owner showing documents breaking down White’s alleged percentage.

The owner allegedly made payments of $35,000 in cash on four separate occasions ā€” June 26, July 17, July 25, and Aug. 9 ā€” toward the agreed amount.

ā€œBecause the investigation into the alleged bribery scheme involved contracts that could soon be awarded and other potential official acts that could be taken, our Office took swift steps to address the alleged crimes we were investigating,ā€ U.S. Attorney Matthew Graves said in a statement.

Officials said the investigation is ongoing.
