WENATCHEE, WA – A quiet Tuesday night at the movies turned chaotic in Wenatchee, Washington, when the ceiling above a nearly empty theater caved in. The incident happened during a screening of “Captain America: Brave New World” at Liberty Cinema, leaving a lone couple dodging debris instead of enjoying the Marvel blockbuster. Firefighters rushed to the scene, and amazingly, no one was hurt.

Firefighters Respond to Sudden Collapse

The Wenatchee Valley Fire Department arrived at the downtown cinema around 8 p.m. on February 25, 2025.

They found the theater littered with rubble, the film still flickering on the screen. Only two people—a man and his girlfriend—were inside when the ceiling gave way.

The department later shared a video of the messy aftermath on Facebook, captioning it, “Talk about an interactive movie experience… just not the kind you want.”

A Narrow Escape

The couple’s evening took a wild turn when strange noises interrupted their private showing.

“They heard some pops and cracking and the gentleman stood up and took a peek,” explained Battalion Chief Cam Phillips of the Wenatchee Valley Fire Department in an interview.

“He walked up toward the screen and as he looked up, he said, ‘Run!’”

His girlfriend didn’t get far.

The ceiling crashed down around her, burying her in debris just one row from the worst of it. Rescuers found her shaken but unharmed amid the wreckage.

Investigation Underway

Authorities are now digging into what caused the structure to fail.

“We are really fortunate that this didn’t happen on a Friday night or a Saturday night when the theater was full,” Phillips said.

A packed house could have turned the close call into a catastrophe. For now, the focus remains on ensuring the building’s safety as the probe continues.
