SEATTLE, WA – A routine patrol in Seattle, Washington turned extraordinary when a parking enforcement officer uncovered a stolen Liberty Bell replica, valued at over $100,000—hidden under a tarp on a city street!
Unexpected Find on Northwest 83rd Street
On Monday morning, around 8 a.m., Parking Enforcement Officer Michael Eaton was working the 1300 block of Northwest 83rd Street in Seattle. He noticed a flatbed trailer detached from any vehicle, its cargo concealed by a rain tarp.
Peering underneath, he spotted a massive bell and quickly connected it to a recent theft report from Evergreen Washelli Cemetery. The Seattle Police Department confirmed Eaton’s sharp instincts led to the recovery of the missing replica.
Theft Reported Days Earlier
The replica Liberty Bell vanished from Evergreen Washelli Cemetery on March 1, police reported. Cemetery staff found a cut lock and open doors at a storage facility, with the prized copper bell gone.
Only 20 such replicas exist worldwide, making it a rare and valuable piece, estimated at more than $100,000. After Eaton’s find, officers reached out to cemetery staff to authenticate and retrieve the bell.
The Original Bell’s Storied Past
The authentic Liberty Bell, housed near Independence Hall in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, has its own history of flaws.
Cast in London in 1751 for the Pennsylvania State House, it broke during its first test. Local metalworkers recast it, but after decades of use, a crack formed in the 1840s. Efforts to fix it widened the damage, leaving the iconic mark visible today.
Investigation Continues in Seattle
Seattle police are now hunting for suspects behind the theft. The ongoing investigation aims to uncover how the heavy bell was stolen and abandoned.
Authorities are urging anyone with photos, videos, or tips to contact them or submit information anonymously.
