MINNEAPOLIS, MN – Minneapolis faced a wave of violence early Saturday morning, leaving two young men dead and several others injured in a series of shootings that have rattled the city. The chaos unfolded downtown near N. 5th Street and Hennepin Avenue, an area that has become all too familiar with violent incidents in recent weeks.
Gunfire Erupts in Downtown Minneapolis
Just before 2 a.m., gunfire broke out as police were responding to multiple fights in the downtown area. According to Minneapolis Police Chief Brian OâHara, officers rushed to the scene after hearing shots, finding five victims scattered around the area.
Tragically, two menâaged 20 and 21âdied from their injuries. Two teenage girls, ages 16 and 17, and a 23-year-old woman were also wounded but are expected to survive. The police were able to make one arrest, a 25-year-old man, in connection with the incident, though his exact involvement is still under investigation. Officers recovered a firearm from the scene, adding to the mounting evidence.
Authorities Promise Action and Increased Security
Following the devastating shooting, law enforcement vowed to bring those responsible to justice. Chief OâHara reassured the public that the Minneapolis Police Department would work tirelessly to investigate the incident and ensure the safety of downtown.
In response to the violence, additional security measures are being implemented, with help from the Hennepin County Sheriffâs Office and 21 Days of Peace, a local violence intervention group. Spokeswoman Megan Larson confirmed that extra deputies would be patrolling downtown over the weekend, with more to follow if the situation doesn’t improve.

A Troubling Pattern of Violence
This weekend’s tragedy came just one week after another violent incident at the same intersection, where an SUV plowed into a crowd following a fight. The crash killed one woman, DeâMiaya Broome, and injured several others. The driver, Latalia Anjolie Margalli, now faces charges of second-degree murder and assault.
Chief OâHara noted the disturbing similarity between the two incidents, with both involving young people gathering late at night and violence erupting soon after. He expressed concern about the rising number of teenagers involved in these altercations and hinted that authorities are looking into whether businesses in the area may be encouraging this behavior.
âThereâs nothing for these teenagers to get into at this time of night but trouble,â OâHara said.
Violence Spreads Across the City
While the downtown shooting was the most deadly, it wasnât the only violence to plague Minneapolis early Saturday morning. In the 3000 block of Lyndale Avenue S., a man was shot just before 1 a.m. Officers provided medical aid before transporting him to HCMC with non-life-threatening injuries.
Another shooting occurred just after 2:45 a.m. on Nicollet Avenue, where two men were injured and later taken to the hospital by private vehicle. Their injuries were also reported as non-life-threatening.
Rising Crime Stokes Fears
With five homicides in Minneapolis over the last weekend alone, the cityâs total homicide count has reached 57 this yearâup from 47 at this time in 2023. The spike in crime has left many residents on edge, unsure of what the future holds as police scramble to contain the violence.
As investigations into these incidents continue, Minneapolis residents are left grappling with fear, wondering when the violence will stop and what can be done to restore order to a city that remains in chaos.
