BENTON COUNTY, WA – Call him Frosty the No-Clothes-Man! A local man’s bizarre adventure took a turn for the worse when he decided to take a cold stroll along railroad tracks—completely naked—from Oregon to Washington. After braving freezing temperatures, he was found the next morning with his feet frozen from the elements. Authorities say his chilly journey left him with frostbite, but luckily, he survived to tell the tale.
Search Efforts Begin After Initial Report
The Benton County Sheriff’s Office received a call at approximately 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, December 15, reporting a naked man walking along the railroad tracks near McNary Dam in the southern part of the county. Deputies contacted BNSF Railway, which indicated that the man was last seen near railroad marker 201.2.
With temperatures dropping as night approached, the sheriff’s office initiated a search, using foot patrols, ATVs, drones, and requesting assistance from LifeFlight for an aerial search. Despite hours of searching, no new sightings were reported, and the search was called off.
Man Found 25 Miles Away and Taken to Hospital
At 5:30 a.m. on Monday, December 16, a caller reported seeing the man walking on Owens Road, located over 25 miles from where he was last seen. Before deputies could arrive, another person offered the man a ride to Trios Health Southridge Hospital in Kennewick, Washington.
Upon arriving at the hospital, deputies learned that the man was in stable condition, though he had “moderate to severe frostbite to both feet.” Authorities said the man provided limited information regarding his ordeal, but investigators concluded that alcohol and/or drugs had impaired his judgment.
Investigation Reveals Long Journey and Risky Decisions
The investigation showed that the man had started his journey the previous day in Umatilla, Oregon. He walked along the railroad tracks and crossed into Benton County, Washington. Near McNary Dam, he undressed and continued walking north through farm fields.
“The male is very lucky considering the temperatures and conditions he traveled during the night with no clothing,” the Benton County Sheriff’s Office stated. Fortunately, his family has been contacted, and he is expected to recover fully.
Authorities urged the public to exercise caution and safety, especially in cold weather conditions. Basically, if it’s December in Oregon and Washington, put on some clothes.
