Question: Where do cicadas live?

Answer:

Cicadas are found in many parts of the world, including the Americas, Asia, Australia, and Africa. These insects are known for their loud, distinctive calls, especially during the summer months.

Cicadas typically live in temperate to tropical climates. They spend most of their lives underground as nymphs, feeding on the sap from plant roots. Depending on the species, they can stay underground for several years, with some, like the famous periodical cicadas, emerging only every 13 or 17 years.

When they are ready to emerge, cicadas come to the surface, shed their exoskeletons, and transform into adults. Adult cicadas are often found in trees and shrubs, where they mate and lay eggs. After mating, the females lay their eggs in the bark of trees, and the cycle begins again.

Cicadas are especially common in the eastern United States, where their periodic mass emergences are quite a spectacle. 🌳🐞
