Question: Where do Hmong people come from?
Answer:
The Hmong people originate from the mountainous regions of China, particularly in the provinces of Yunnan, Guizhou, and Sichuan. Over time, many Hmong migrated to Southeast Asia, and significant populations now live in Laos, Vietnam, Thailand, and Myanmar.
In the 1970s, during the Vietnam War, many Hmong sided with the United States in the “Secret War” in Laos. After the war, many Hmong were displaced and faced persecution. This led to a large wave of Hmong refugees resettling in other countries, including the United States, France, Australia, and Canada.
In the U.S., the Hmong community is particularly strong in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and California. They have established vibrant communities and continue to preserve their rich cultural traditions while also integrating into their new homes.
