College Night Turns Deadly

The chaos erupted early Saturday morning on Southwood Drive near Hazel Street when Mason Fike, a college student with his future ahead of him, was ambushed in a shocking act of violence.

At around 1 a.m., Fike was heading home when a confrontation turned ugly. The scene, which could have been straight out of a horror movie, saw Fike brutally stabbed multiple times by a local teen, Jeffrey Thomas Rice.

The Violent Confrontation

According to reports, the incident began with a verbal exchange over something as mundane as bicycles.

Fike, frustrated by a group of teens, reportedly shouted at them. But this simple argument took a sinister turn when Rice allegedly retaliated with violence.

Witnesses say the altercation escalated rapidly in front of Rice’s home, where he unleashed a flurry of punches before plunging a pocket knife into Fike multiple times. The savage attack left Fike with critical injuries, including damage to vital organs.

Critical Condition and a Community’s Hope

Fike was rushed to Regions Hospital in St. Paul, where doctors are battling to save his life. His injuries are severe, with damage to his bladder, colon, kidney, intestine, and spleen.

The medical bills are piling up, and the Fike family is turning to the community for support. A GoFundMe campaign has been launched, with donations pouring in to help cover the enormous costs. Consider supporting here.

So far, they’ve managed to raise over $48,000, but with a goal of $50,000, they’re still hoping for more support as Mason remains in critical condition.

Meanwhile, the alleged attacker, Jeffrey Thomas Rice, is facing the full weight of the law. Arrested shortly after the incident, Rice is being held on a first-degree assault charge, a crime that could see him locked away for up to 20 years if convicted.

Despite expressing remorse in a recorded jail call, Rice has claimed self-defense, but with the evidence stacked against him, his future looks grim. His next court appearance is scheduled for August 21, where the legal battle over this shocking crime will continue.

The community of White Bear Lake is left reeling, with many questioning how a simple dispute could turn into such a nightmare.
