The “Fighting” portion was added in 1911 to pay tribute to Illinois soldiers who fought and died in World War I. The first known use of the full “Fighting Illini” term appeared in a newspaper article praising the basketball team’s gritty play.

The Chief Illiniwek Controversy 🪶

From 1926 to 2007, a student portraying Chief Illiniwek would perform at Illinois football and basketball games. However, many Native American groups viewed the Chief as an offensive stereotype, leading to his retirement in 2007.

Since Chief Illiniwek’s retirement, the university has been searching for a new mascot. Top contenders have included an otter named Alma and a belted kingfisher, but no official decision has been made yet.
