A Shrinking State in a Growing Nation 📉
The U.S. population is bouncing back after the pandemic slowdown, but Illinois isn’t joining the party. From July 2022 to July 2023, the state lost nearly 33,000 people. That’s the third-biggest drop in the country, behind only New York and California.
Illinois’ Decade-Long Decline 📆
This isn’t a new problem for Illinois. The state has been losing residents for 10 years straight! Since the 2020 census, Illinois has said farewell to over 263,000 people.
Neighbors Are Growing, but Illinois Is Slowing 🌎
While Illinois’ population shrinks, neighboring states like Indiana are seeing growth. The good news? Illinois’ rate of decline has slowed down compared to last year. Small victories, right?
Where Are Illinoisans Going? 🚗
Census data shows that nearly 84,000 people left Illinois for other states in the past year. On the flip side, international immigration added about 40,000 new faces to the state.
What’s Causing the Illinois Exodus? 🤷♀️
Experts say Illinois needs to focus on keeping its current residents and attracting new ones from other states. But what’s driving people away? That’s the million-dollar question!
A recent study by United Van Lines sheds some light on the reasons behind the Illinois exodus. According to the survey, work (26.10%) and retirement (21.40%) were the main factors pushing residents out of the state. Surprisingly, the high cost of living was the least cited reason for leaving. The study also revealed a nationwide trend of Americans moving to more affordable and lower-density areas, particularly in the South.
The Bottom Line 📊
While the rest of the country is bouncing back, Illinois is still struggling to keep its population afloat. But with a little TLC and some smart strategies, maybe the Prairie State can turn things around and become a destination instead of a departure point.
