A Tale of Territory Disagreements
Before becoming the 19th state we know and love today, Indiana went through years of territorial disputes. It all started in the fall of 1763 when Shawnee and other tribes overpowered traders on the Ohio River. These traders were part of the Philadelphia Company, which aimed to monopolize Indigenous trade in the region.
The tribes couldn’t afford to repay the company for their losses, so they gave them 5,000 square miles of land south of the Ohio River instead. This land was later transferred to the “Indiana Land Company,” but Virginia claimed jurisdiction over the settlers and prohibited the sale of the land.
The Indiana Company’s Fight
The Indiana Company insisted that if Virginia wanted to keep the land, they needed to be compensated. They took their case to federal court, which led to an amendment to the Constitution. However, the company ultimately lost its claim on the land to Virginia and disappeared.
The Birth of Indiana
It wasn’t until 1800 when Congress divided the Northwest Territory that Indiana became a prevalent name again. On May 7, 1800, the western section of the territory was named the Indiana Territory, and the rest is history!
