Why is Indianapolis called Circle City?

Originally, this central hub was supposed to be called “Governor’s Circle” since the governor’s mansion was going to be built there. But when the impressive Soldiers and Sailors Monument was erected in the circle in 1902, the space was renamed “Monument Circle.” And just like that, a legendary Indy landmark was born!
