Is Milwaukee Becoming Safer? Crime Rates Show Promising Decline in 2024

Milwaukee, Wisconsin, a city known for its rich history and vibrant culture, has long been grappling with a reputation for high crime rates. However, recent crime data from the first quarter of 2024 suggests that the tide may be turning, offering a glimmer of hope for residents and visitors alike.

A Look at the Numbers

According to Milwaukee police, the city has seen a significant decrease in crime across multiple categories in the first three months of 2024:

  • Homicides are down by 39%, from 38 in 2023 to 23 in 2024
  • Property crime is down by 11%
  • Auto thefts have declined by 10%, from 1,431 in 2023 to 1,295 in 2024
  • Crashes remained nearly the same, with 3,415 in 2024 compared to 3,423 in 2023
  • Hit-and-run crashes decreased by 1%, from 1,269 in 2023 to 1,258 in 2024
  • Fatalities decreased by 44%, from 16 in 2023 to 9 in 2024

Police Chief Jeffrey Norman attributes this positive trend to the combined efforts of the police department, the Office of Community Wellness and Safety, and the support of the local community. “We’re at a stage now where we know that the level of partnership and community partnerships and institutional partnerships across the board, is having an impact in the community,” said Ashanti Hamilton, Director for the Office of Community Wellness and Safety, in a recent interview.

Focusing on Youth Engagement

Despite the encouraging numbers, city officials are keeping a close eye on the fact that a larger share of homicide and shooting victims in 2023 were children. To address this issue, Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson emphasizes the importance of engaging young people in positive activities.

“There are a number of organizations all throughout Milwaukee that want to serve our young people. So the hand is extended. We need young people in their families to extend the hand back, to be engaged in a positive manner this summer and every single summer,” said Mayor Johnson in a recent interview.

Police Efficiency on the Rise

Chief Norman also highlighted the police department’s impressive homicide clearance rate, which stands at over 80% so far in 2024. He credits this success to officers and detectives having more time to dedicate to serious crimes due to the overall reduction in crime.

A Reason to Celebrate, but No Time to Relax

Mayor Johnson expressed optimism about the latest crime figures, telling reporters: “We’ve got every reason to applaud the latest numbers across the board. Milwaukee is headed in the right direction when it comes to crime. But now is certainly no time to relax.”

While Milwaukee still has work to do in terms of further reducing crime and ensuring the safety of its residents and visitors, the recent data offers a promising outlook for the city’s future. With continued collaboration between law enforcement, community organizations, and residents, Milwaukee is taking steps towards shedding its dangerous reputation and becoming a safer place for all.
