Have you ever asked yourself: why is Minneapolis so dangerous? It’s a question we get asked a lot. You see, Minneapolis, the largest city in Minnesota, has been making headlines for its high crime rates. But what’s really going on? We dug deep to uncover the truth behind the city’s dangerous reputation.
A City Plagued by Violence
Minneapolis has been struggling with violent crime for years. In 2021, the city saw a staggering 97 homicides, a number that dropped to 80 in 2022 and 72 in 2023 (source: City of Minneapolis). While the trend is moving in the right direction, these figures are still much higher than pre-pandemic levels. In 2019, Minneapolis had just 48 homicides (source: City of Minneapolis). It is good news that things seem to be getting better with time – despite what you may be hearing.
The Root of the Problem
So, what’s causing this surge in violence? Experts point to a combination of factors, including the pandemic, economic instability, and the aftermath of George Floyd’s murder in 2020 (source: WCCO TV). The city has also been grappling with a shortage of police officers, making it harder to keep the streets safe (source: Pioneer Press).
The Vital Role of Law Enforcement
Amidst the challenges faced by Minneapolis, it’s crucial to recognize the essential role played by the city’s police force. The brave men and women in blue put their lives on the line every day to protect and serve the community. They respond to emergency calls, investigate crimes, and work tirelessly to keep the streets safe.
The Minneapolis Police Department has also been implementing new strategies and technologies to combat crime more effectively, such as deploying additional officers to high-crime areas and utilizing data-driven policing methods (source: Star Tribune). These efforts, along with the dedication of individual officers, are making a real difference in the fight against violence.
What to Expect if You Visit
If you’re planning a trip to Minneapolis, it’s important to be aware of the risks. While most areas of the city are safe, some neighborhoods have higher crime rates than others. It’s always a good idea to research your destination, stay alert, and take common-sense precautions like avoiding walking alone at night and keeping valuables out of sight.
My hubby Jack and I were both born and raised in Minneapolis and have lived in the Twin Cities most of our lives. Although we call Winona, Minnesota home now – as a mixed race couple we have always felt very safe exploring Minneapolis and St. Paul. Reporting on crime sells newspapers and gets shares on social media, so things tend to be greatly sensationalized. Keep this in mind, but remain vigilant and aware of your surroundings. And hey, while you’re at it: share this article. It really helps us out:
Progress on the Horizon
Despite the challenges, there are signs of hope for Minneapolis. Police Chief Brian O’Hara recently told WCCO TV, “The trend is going in the right direction, but it’s nowhere near where it was prior to 2020.” The city has also seen a 43% drop in carjackings thanks to a crackdown by U.S. Attorney Andy Luger (source: Axios).
Community Groups Take Action
Local community groups are also stepping up to make a difference. Organizations like MAD DADS and A Mother’s Love are working to prevent violence and support families affected by crime (source: Star Tribune). These grassroots efforts, combined with increased police presence and strategic initiatives, are helping to create a safer Minneapolis for everyone.
Conclusion: A City United in Hope
Minneapolis has undoubtedly faced its share of challenges in recent years, but the city’s spirit remains unbroken. The people of Minneapolis are resilient, compassionate, and committed to building a better future. From the police officers who serve with honor to the community groups who work to uplift their neighbors, there are countless individuals making a positive impact every day.
As the city continues to address its crime problem through a combination of law enforcement strategies and community-driven initiatives, there is reason to be hopeful. With time, dedication, and a shared vision for a safer, more prosperous Minneapolis, the city can overcome its struggles and emerge stronger than ever before. Safe travels!

🗣 What do you think: why is Minneapolis so dangerous? Or is it? We’d LOVE to hear from you in the comments section below. ⬇️
Now that you have left the city.!!! Its still full of crime. It has nothing to do with the news. Please don’t comment on the stats, without actually listing the crime that happens daily …. still…. we are living it daily. We are witnessing it with our eyes. Not reading the news. We are watching car being stolen, neighbors being assaulted on the neighborhood streets and in their homes. Doors kicked in during the day… and we live in the “good neighborhood “. Mpls has no law and order . It’s in chaos still. Please give people facts, not opinion from the safety of Winona.
Thank you for your optimism. However, crime in our Mpls metro will not go away until felons are held responsible for their crimes. I read a news report recently about a felon with 9 outstanding warrants. How does anyone have 9 outstanding warrants, and they’re still on the streets? Because they’re arrested and released, but never show up for court. The police arrest them, and they’re right back out, regardless of their mile-long rap sheet. Until policies change, and criminals face consequences, I believe more police officers won’t make a substantial difference.

Hi Judy! We agree, there’s a lot of work that needs to be done…but where would we all be without optimism 🙂 We appreciate you sooo much – thanks for reading and commenting. It’s great hearing your insights. Have a wonderful weekend! – Jack and Kitty
I live in North Minneapolis (which many consider to be one of the most “Dangerous” parts of town. ) I am a homeowner in the Webber-Camden neighborhood. I live a relatively peaceful life and have never witnessed any violent crime in the Twin Cities. I know that there is crime however, all I need to do is turn on the news. There are gangs, drugs, etc. I have noticed somewhat of a disconnect though, depending on who is telling you about crime. If you listen to some people, you’d think Minneapolis was a warzone that isn’t safe at all. This is not my experience, and I see plenty of people walking there dogs, playing with their kids in public parks, and living their lives. Common sense goes a long way!
Are you kidding me? Police brutality hasn’t changed in the city of Minneapolis. Pack your weapons if you want ANY chance of defending yourself against the vigilantes in blue.
Hey Vance – Thanks for reading and for commenting. We value everyone’s thoughts. Much appreciated. Have a great weekend! – Jack and Kitty
