NORTH FORT MYERS, FL — Early on the morning of March 26, a thief made off with thousands in stolen utility carts from behind a Winn-Dixie Liquor store on Bayshore Road, leaving investigators in Florida searching for answers and a suspect still at large.

Brazen Theft Before Breakfast

Just after 6 a.m., surveillance captured a suspect sneaking into the outdoor area behind the Winn-Dixie Liquor at 5696 Bayshore Road. The individual hauled away five gray U-boat utility carts—each worth $300—and a green double-decker cart valued at $200. With a combined total of $1,700, the stolen haul amounted to a significant loss for the business. The carts, used for transporting heavy stock, were removed without permission.

Tips Could Bring Cash—and Justice

Southwest Florida Crime Stoppers has urged anyone with knowledge about the theft to come forward. Those who offer information that leads to an arrest could receive up to $3,000 in reward money. Tipsters can remain anonymous through the P3 app, online, or by calling 800-780-TIPS.

  • The average retail store loses roughly 1.4% of its total revenue to theft annually, equating to billions across the U.S. (National Retail Federation).
  • U-boat carts, often used in stocking and transport, are frequently targeted by thieves due to their high resale value and utility (Retail Loss Prevention Magazine).
  • Florida is among the top ten states in the U.S. for organized retail crime, contributing to mounting concerns for store owners and law enforcement alike (FBI Uniform Crime Reporting).

Moment for Reflection

Even in the early hours when darkness lingers, light eventually breaks through. This small crime reminds us how the smallest actions—whether good or bad—can ripple through a community. May those who see wrongdoing choose to speak up, and may we all be reminded of the grace that comes from accountability, redemption, and helping one another see the better path forward.
