Trapped and Terrified: Rescue Teams Rush to Save Man!

MOBILE, AL – In a moment that surely called for divine intervention, an Alabama window washer found himself in desperate need of God’s protection when his equipment malfunctioned, leaving him hanging more than 450 feet in the air over downtown Mobile, Ala., officials said.

As he hung there, helpless and vulnerable, prayers for a safe rescue must have filled the hearts of onlookers and the brave rescuers who rushed to save him.

The Mobile Fire-Rescue Department said several units were dispatched to the RSA Battle House Tower Monday afternoon after the trapped window washer and his coworker called 911.

The man reported his descender got stuck, leaving him unable to move up or down. Despite dangling some 450 feet in the air, the man said he was in no danger of falling.

Among the crews dispatched tot he scene were rescue technicians trained in high-angle rescues, the fire department said.

Rescuers set up a rope system on a small roof on the 35th floor of the building, and lowered a rescuer to another small roof on the 33rd floor. From there, the rescuer was lowered down to the trapped window washer more than one story below that.

Upon reaching the window washer, the rescuer attached the man’s harness to the fire department’s rope system. Crews on the 35th floor then used the pulley system to lift the window washer to the 33rd floor, where “a haul team of several people” brought him over the edge onto the 33rd floor roof.

Once on the roof, the window washer was able to walk into the building through an open window. The man was checked out by paramedics, but he was uninjured.

“It worked like clockwork, it was beautiful,” District 1 Chief Brandon Jackson said in a statement. “Everybody walked away and went home safely.”
