WASHINGTON, D.C. – The East Coast is facing serious travel disruptions as a massive winter storm continues to impact the U.S. Airports have been hit hard, with over 1,000 flights grounded on Monday alone. Washington D.C. was the hardest hit for travelers. The storm has already caused chaos for travelers, as snow and icy conditions spread from the Rockies to the Northeast, leaving airports and airlines scrambling.
Winter Storm Takes Aim at the East Coast
This powerful storm, which began in the Rockies, quickly moved eastward, bringing hazardous weather across the country. Dangerous ice and heavy snow have affected more than a dozen states, including northern Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and New Jersey.
By Monday, snow was falling heavily across the mid-Atlantic region, with major disruptions expected in Washington D.C. and Baltimore. Meteorologists warned of further challenges for travelers as the storm continued its march across the U.S.
Massive Flight Cancellations Hit Major Airports
As the storm intensified, flight cancellations piled up. By Monday morning, more than 1,490 flights had been canceled within, into, or out of the U.S., according to FlightAware data. The disruptions started the previous day, with over 1,800 flights canceled on Sunday.
Washington D.C. airports were among the hardest-hit, with Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) alone canceling over 230 flights, making up 60% of its scheduled departures. Baltimore/Washington International (BWI) and Dulles International (IAD) also saw significant cancellations.
Airlines Respond with Waivers and Alerts
Several airlines, including Southwest Airlines, Delta, and United, have issued travel waivers for affected areas. These waivers allow travelers to change their flight plans without penalty due to the ongoing storm conditions.
In addition, officials from airports and airlines continue to urge passengers to monitor their flights closely for schedule changes.
With snow emergencies declared in Washington D.C., Maryland, and New Jersey, local governments have advised people to avoid unnecessary travel as the storm brings more challenges to the region.
Travelers should prepare for further disruptions as the storm continues to affect much of the East Coast, with many unsure of when normal service will resume.
