NEW RICHMOND, WI — A 70-year-old man, Gordon Laakso, was arrested in western Wisconsin on charges of first-degree intentional homicide, domestic abuse by strangulation and suffocation, and hiding a corpse. The victim, his 68-year-old wife, Mary Laakso, was found dead in a rural area after a disturbing sequence of events unfolded on March 2, 2025. The arrest followed a 911 call reporting a possible domestic disturbance at the couple’s home in New Richmond.

The New Richmond Police Department received the emergency call around 1:45 p.m. on Sunday, prompted by a report that Gordon Laakso had made alarming statements earlier that day hinting he may have harmed his wife.

Officers arrived at the residence in the 1300 block of Bluff Border Road, where they encountered Gordon Laakso. Mary Laakso, however, was not at the scene, and attempts to contact her by phone failed.

Body Found in Cornfield

More than two hours later, authorities located Mary Laakso’s body on the edge of a cornfield in a rural part of Polk County, north of New Richmond.

According to a criminal complaint, Gordon Laakso admitted to police that an altercation with his wife escalated after she had been talking at him for seven hours and then began striking him. He told officers the situation spiraled out of control, though he offered little further explanation.

Laakso reportedly acknowledged his wife’s death and said he panicked, choosing to dispose of her body rather than seek medical help. He then began packing a suitcase, indicating to police he was prepared to leave with them. During a search of the home, investigators found bloody gloves and several firearms, adding to the evidence in the case.

Suspect’s Statements to Police

When detectives questioned Gordon Laakso about his wife’s whereabouts, he allegedly responded with surprise, asking if they hadn’t found her yet. Pressed further, he confirmed her death, stating simply that she was no longer alive.

Following his arrest, Laakso was booked into the St. Croix County Jail, where he remains held on a $1 million bond.

The incident has left the quiet community of New Richmond reeling as authorities continue their investigation.
