MILWAUKEE, WI —A Wisconsin man spent nearly a month sleeping beside his girlfriend’s lifeless body before finally reporting her death—only because the landlord was coming to check the apartment! Serkan Akcilad, 24, walked into the Milwaukee Police Administration Building on February 27 and used a translation app to report that his girlfriend, Silan Tut, was dead. The Turkish national claimed he had no idea how she died and insisted he was too unfamiliar with U.S. laws to report it earlier. But the gruesome scene investigators found inside their shared apartment told a far different story.
A Bloody Crime Scene and a Staged Body
When officers entered the unit on North 10th Street, they found Tut’s body on the floor, her head propped on a pillow.
The medical examiner determined she had been dead for about a month, with multiple stab wounds to her torso and neck. The scene suggested a disturbing effort to stage the body.
Akcilad claimed he had left their apartment for an errand about 20 days before reporting the death, only to return and find Tut covered in blood. At first, he thought she was playing a prank—until he tried to lift her and realized she was “cold as ice.”
He allegedly fainted from shock. But instead of calling the police, he spent the next several weeks sleeping beside her lifeless body.
Disturbing Clues and a Chilling Timeline
Evidence revealed that Akcilad remained in the apartment long after Tut’s death. Food receipts in the trash showed he was regularly buying meals between February 14 and February 21.
Investigators also found blood spatter throughout the home and an eviction notice dated January 8, demanding he pay over $1,200 in past-due rent.
A neighbor recalled hearing a violent argument between the couple on January 24—screaming that lasted 5 to 10 minutes.
Surveillance footage showed Akcilad purchasing bleach that same day. The next morning, he allegedly tried to kill himself with a nail gun, shooting himself in the head. He survived and underwent surgery to remove the nail lodged in his brain.
A Suspicious Delay in Reporting
Despite his claims of innocence, Akcilad’s own admissions raised red flags. He admitted moving Tut’s body from where she had bled out to its final position just one day before reporting her death. He also confessed to using her phone to send messages to her family, pretending she was still alive.
His reason for finally coming forward? The property manager was scheduled to check the apartment the next day.
Akcilad was charged with first-degree reckless homicide with a weapon modifier. He remains in custody on a $1 million bond and is set to appear in court on March 19.
