CALEDONIA, WI — A 15-year-old boy, Reed Gelinskey, faces charges of first-degree intentional homicide following the death of his mother, Suzanne Gelinskey, in their Caledonia, Wisconsin home. Authorities found Suzanne dead on March 4 with apparent stab wounds, and Reed was taken into custody that same day. The case has shaken the quiet Wisconsin community as details of the incident emerge.
Reed appeared in court via Zoom on March 6 alongside his defense attorney, Alex Hahn, and was ordered held on a $1 million bond. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on March 12 and is being charged as an adult. A subsequent court appearance occurred on March 7.
A Violent Encounter Unfolds
Police responded to the Gelinskey residence on March 4, where they discovered Suzanne’s body in the foyer, surrounded by blood-soaked clothing. Officers observed Reed exiting the house as they arrived. According to authorities, Reed dropped a kitchen knife near the front stoop and urged officers to end his life, stating that his mother was dead due to his actions.
The events leading to the killing began earlier that evening.
Reed was in the living room with Suzanne, who was watching a movie on her computer, while he turned on a Netflix show about the Menendez brothers—Erik and Lyle Menendez, convicted of murdering their parents in 1989. Reed later told police that a specific scene involving a shotgun inspired him to devise a plan to kill his own parents. He admitted to feeling depressed and experiencing an urge to harm them that day, adding that he had taken nine anxiety pills prescribed to his brother because they gave him a high.
Around 9:50 p.m., Reed told his mother he was retrieving his sleep medication while she went upstairs. Instead, he concealed a kitchen knife in his pocket and a dumbbell handle up his shirt sleeve. When he indicated he couldn’t find the medication, Suzanne returned downstairs. As her back was turned, Reed struck her twice in the head with the dumbbell. When she didn’t collapse, he pushed her to the floor, then stabbed her three times in the chest and twice in the neck.
During the attack, Suzanne fought back, kicking at her son. Reed recounted that she asked him why he was doing this, to which he replied that it was because of pain.
Aftermath and Investigation
Following the attack, Reed sent an image from the scene to a friend via Snapchat, instructing her to contact the police, which she did. Authorities also learned that Reed had searched for a hammer earlier that day, intending to use it against his father, but couldn’t find one large enough.
Reed, now in custody, awaits his next court date as the legal process unfolds. The investigation continues, with police relying on Reed’s statements and evidence from the scene to piece together the motive and circumstances of this devastating event.
