ASHLAND, WI — The elegant Best Western Hotel Chequamegon rises above Lake Superior’s misty shores in Wisconsin like a Victorian grande dame with secrets to tell. And oh, what secrets they are.

A Fiery Past Gives Birth to Supernatural Present

The hotel’s story begins in 1877, when the Wisconsin Central Railroad erected the first Hotel Chequamegon during the region’s roaring lumber boom. But after a devastating 1958 blaze reduced it to ashes, a new incarnation rose in 1986 near the original’s ruins.

It seems some former guests decided to stick around — flame-resistant and all.

The Mysterious Man About Town

Hotel staff whisper about their most persistent patron: a dapper gentleman in a top hat who apparently didn’t get the memo about modern fashion.

This spectral socialite takes regular evening constitutionals through the corridors, though he’s never bothered to sign the guest book.

The Haunted Hotspots

Rooms 312 and 314 have earned special recognition among paranormal enthusiasts, but not for their superior amenities.

Objects play musical chairs when no one’s watching, and unexplained sounds echo through the walls.

The hotel’s attic has become such a paranormal playground that even the most skeptical visitors have left scratching their heads.

Five-Star Views (Dead or Alive)

Despite — or perhaps because of — its otherworldly occupants, the Hotel Chequamegon remains one of Wisconsin’s premier lakeside destinations.

The pristine views of Chequamegon Bay would stop your heart… though hopefully not permanently.

A History Written in Smoke

Before settling into its current location, the hotel’s previous incarnations met dramatic ends.

The original building was condemned and demolished, making way for the Culver Hotel in 1915. That became the Menard Hotel in 1924, which met its explosive finale in the early hours of 1957 when a mysterious blast in the bar sent it up in flames.

Today, Menard Park stands as a quiet memorial to this fiery history.

For brave souls seeking a brush with the supernatural — or just a luxurious lakeside stay with potential paranormal perks — the Hotel Chequamegon awaits. Just don’t be surprised if you find yourself sharing an elevator with a rather well-dressed gentleman from another era. Have you ever had a paranormal encounter? Let us know in the comments!
